Day 99: Biden’s Border Wall, on Substack

from How We Got Here, on Substack: https://lnkd.in/gsyAQVbM

What the Biden administration has been doing on immigration is perfect compliance with U.S. treaty and law. Since 1951, much of the world has recognized that, in extreme circumstances, people are allowed to flee to another country and request asylum. Countries who signed the U.N. Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees committed to this. After seeing what happened in Europe during the war, the United States committed to it. The Refugee Act of 1980 made that treaty commitment clear in U.S. law. There’s no requirement in the law that they wait months or years to get an appointment at a checkpoint, although it isn’t clear that they can cross a border without self-reporting, either.

I don’t know what would happen if the U.S. did or does nothing to stem the tide of people coming here, trying to beat the next Trump administration. Would our country be overwhelmed? Even if most of the new arrivals have families here that will take them in? In a country of 330 million people, how many more can be absorbed?

Immigration did overwhelm this continent once. From How We Got Here on Substack: https://lnkd.in/gsyAQVbM
