Day 34: Gratitude, August

Summer days …

Waking up lightly as the sun peeks in crosswise across the bed

These cotton shorts will do again, the same old sandals and a T-shirt that’s clean (I think) - the mirror won’t complain since I don’t consult her

No bus to catch, no class to rush to, iced tea brewing in the press pot and a few sun salutations on the deck

Pruning the petunias, weeding the peppers - the tomatoes will take water but the basil likes it dry

Check the score - sixteen runs! The chase is on, the energy infectious, no matter how often I resolve to indifference

My job today looks just the way I spent every weekend as a child, book in hand, on the couch for hours

All the more precious for their dwindling

Down into fall.
