Day 313: NBAU

On the day of the last faculty meeting before graduation, spirits are usually high.

Usually, the sun is shining. Classes are over, early grades are finished. The faculty approves the graduation list, and learns which students have been elected to the Order of the Barristers for achievement in oral advocacy and Order of the Coif for academic achievement. With everyone gathered and the work mostly completed, people relax and celebrate the year.

“No Business” As Usual

This year, happily, was really no different. Yes, there were some regretful farewells, but also genuine good will for those moving on. And I got coached up by our outgoing Faculty Senator about what to expect when I take over that watchdog office next year. There were a few passing jocular remarks about “the recent unpleasantness.”

But mostly, we relaxed and took a few moments to enjoy each other’s company, like we rarely find time to do during the academic year, and like we usually do on this day.

There were photos and smiles and mini celebrations; there were crackers and ice cream and mini carrots. I left the post-meeting reception to help a student finish an asylum application on deadline, and when I returned an hour later, just as many people, faculty and staff, were standing around chatting and eating sugar. (N.B.: Did you know Lucky Charms sells whole bags of those devilishly delicious marshmallows? Now you know.)

Sometimes things change, and not for the better. But today reinforced, for me, the feeling that most things go on.
