Day 267: Judging Migration, on Substack

Around the world today, millions of people are fleeing for their lives.

All have genuine fears of extreme harm or death. But some of them qualify as refugees under U.S. law, and some don’t.

Who is “worthy” of saving? Are these even judgments we should be making? It turns out that officials in Germany and Switzerland were making these kinds of decisions in the 18th century in deciding who should be allowed to emigrate.
