House Speaker Mike Johnson says the Biden-Senate immigration deal is “absolutely dead,” according to CNN.

Yawn.

Maybe someday another moment will come, when immigration can actually be made sensible, humane, and controlled.

Sensible reforms are obvious. For example, the law could grant temporary work visas for people willing to do the jobs that U.S. businesses can’t fill, and then allowed people to return home after a term of work.

For an immigration law scholar, the present moment feels “absolutely dead.”
