People who worried about immigration in the early 20th century feared it would shift social control and destabilize institutions.

As I’ve written before, an uncontrolled immigration wave to North America had done just that — in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

If AI creates a new, self-aware type of being — as some of its own creators assure us it will — will it shift control and destabilize institutions again?

If we favor open or relaxed immigration policies now, do we have moral grounds to suppress that change?

In other words, what does it mean to be human?
