Day 42: “Preliminary Recommendations” for “Academic Transformation”

As has been widely reported, WVU announced a $45 million budget shortfall this spring and is now conducting an “Academic Program Portfolio Review” process, including a “review” of roughly half of the departments in the university, including the College of Law. All programs under review were required to submit a “Program Review Self-Study Form” on August 1.

After a study period of ten days, the university announced its “Preliminary Recommendations” for all programs under review. You can read the document sent to the College of Law here.

According to University Relations, the “Preliminary Recommendations” are to eliminate 32 majors and 169 faculty positions across the university.

No doubt there will be a great deal more to say about this process as the year unfolds. For now - well, let’s just let this news sink in.

(By the way, in looking for art to illustrate this post, I decided to type “preliminary recommendations” into a stock photo site. The above was one of the images generated. )
